Who was Adi Shankaracharya?
 
Adi Shankaracharya (Birth name: Shankara, Birth: 788 AD – Death: 820 AD) was a founder of Advaita Vedanta, Sanskrit scholar, Upanishad lecturer and Hindu religious preacher. According to Hindu religious belief, he is considered an incarnation of Lord Shankar. He traveled almost all over India. Most of his life was spent in North India.

His main notable work was to establish four Peeths. He wrote many books. But his philosophy is found in his commentaries on Upanishads, Brahmasutras and Gita.

Apart from the four Maths, Adi Shankaracharya had also established twelve Jyotirlingas in the whole country. Adi Shankaracharya is considered to be the originator of the Advaita tradition.
 
What is the qualification to become a Shankaracharya
 
For the appointment of Shankaracharya on all the four Peeths of the country, these qualifications are necessary – Tyagi should be a Brahmin, a Brahmachari, a Dandi monk, a knower of Sanskrit, Chaturveda, Vedanta and Puranas, not a political one.

Where are the four monasteries of Shankaracharyas
 
These four monasteries were established in the eighth century BC. These four Maths are still promoting and spreading the Sanatan tradition under the leadership of four Shankaracharyas. Every Shankaracharya has to make the most qualified disciple his successor in his lifetime. These four monasteries are in the four corners of the country.
 
  1. Uttaramanya Math or Uttar Math, Jyotirmath located in Joshimath
  2. Poorvamanya Math or Eastern Math, Govardhan Math located in Puri
  3. Dakshinamanya Math or Southern Math, Sringeri Sharda Peeth which is situated in Sringeri.
  4. Paschimamanya Math or Western Math, Dwarka Peeth which is situated in Dwarka.
