Everyone believes that the temple is several thousand years old, but there is no single opinion about how many years old it is. Some people say that the temple is 2000 years old. Travancore historian Dr. LA Ravi Varma says that this temple was established on the first day of Kali Yuga and the idol of Lord Vishnu in this temple is believed to have been established in the 950th year of Kali Yuga.
 
This temple was so famous even in earlier times that Tipu Sultan attacked to capture it. Tipu Sultan attacked this temple in the year 1790, but he had to face defeat near Kochi, due to which this temple did not fall in the hands of Tipu Sultan and even today his traditional heritage remains intact.
