According to a legend, once there was a dispute between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma over the matter of supremacy in power. In the end, the gathering came to an end and Lord Shiva asked both of them to find the end of their Shiva Linga. Lord Vishnu did not see the end and accepted his defeat. But Lord Brahma became stubborn and was not ready to accept that he could not see the end of Anant Shiva Linga.
Due to Lord Brahma's lie, Lord Shiva took the incarnation of Kaal Bhairav and he cut off the fifth head of Lord Brahma. The form of Kaal Bhairav is so destructive and it shows the face of 'Annihilation' and 'Pralaya'. Kaal Bhairav's vehicle is a black dog, hence, black dogs get importance on this Kala Ashtami. Kaal Bhairav is known as 'Dandpati'. He punishes and blesses evil men who feel sorry for bad deeds. This is the most frightening form of Lord Shiva. therefore; We celebrate Kaal Ashtami as the birth anniversary of Kaal Bhairav.
