The temple was officially inaugurated on November 6th, 2005 by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Shri L. K. Advani etc., were present at the inauguration. The temple has been constructed according to the Pancharatna Shastra and the Vastu Shastra. In this temple in Delhi, the focal point is the main shrine and this shrine is the one maintaining the entire complex’s central position. Various exhibition halls are present through whom we can get information and insights into the work of Swaminarayan. Contemporary modes of technology and communication have been adopted by the complex’s designers for the creation of the several exhibition halls.
An abhishek mandap, a thematic garden, a Sahaj Anand water show, and three exhibitions- Sahajanand Darshan, Neelkanth Darshan, and Sanskruti Darshan are some of the several features present in the complex. The word ‘Akshardham’ means to be the abode of Swaminarayan according to Swaminarayan Hinduism, and it is believed by the followers and adherents as a temporary home of the God, in our world.
The major attraction of the Swaminarayan Akshardham complex is the Akshardham Mandir. It rises 141-foot high, spans 316foot (96 m) wide, and extends 356-foot (109 m) long. It is intricately and carefully carved with flora, dancers, fauna, deities, and musicians.

This Akshardham Mandir was designed by Virendra Trivedi, a member of the Sompura family, and BAPS Swamis. It is wholly built from Italian Carrara marble and Rajasthani pink sandstone. Based upon traditional Hindu architectural guidelines (Shilpa shastras) on maximum temple life span, it doesn’t make any use of ferrous metal. Thus, it has no support from steel or concrete.
Michael Whitty, an official world record adjudicator for Guinness World Record, on December 17th 2007, travelled to Ahmedabad, India for presenting a new world record to the spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, for the temple complex.
The record was presented for the temple for being World's Largest Comprehensive Hindu Temple.
This temple also consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, nine domes, and 20,000 murtis of devotees, swamis, and acharyas. The temple also features the Gajendra Pith at its base, a plinth paying tribute to the elephant for its significance in Hindu culture and the history of India. It constitutes of 148 life sized elephants weighing a total of 3000 tons, taken together.
Below the temple's central dome lies the 11-foot (3.4m) high murti of Swaminarayan seated in abhayamudra to whom the temple is dedicated. Swaminarayan is surrounded by images of the faith's lineage of Gurus depicted either in a devotional posture or in a posture of service. Each murti is made of five metals or paanch dhaatu in accordance with the traditions of Hinduism. The temple also houses the murtis of Sita Ram, Radha Krishna, Shiv Parvati, and Lakshmi Narayan.

Sahajanand Darshan
The Hall of Values features dioramas and lifelike robotics that depict happenings from the life of Swaminarayan, portraying his message about the significance of harmony, peace, service to others, humility, and devotion to God. Set in India in the 18th century, the audience experiences eternal messages gleaned from ancient Hindu culture such as vegetarianism, non‐violence, prayers, perseverance, morality, and family harmony through 15 3-D dioramas that make use of latest fibre optics, robotics, light and sound dialogues, effects, and music. The hall also features the smallest animatronic robot in the world in the form of Ghanshyam Maharaj, the child form of Swaminarayan.
