Hariyali Amavasya, also known as Sawan Amavasya or Shravan Amavasya, is an important festival celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Shravan according to the Hindu calendar.

The month of Shravan is seen as the beginning of the monsoon season and the symbol of greenery, which is why the festival of Shravan Amavasya is also called the festival of greenery. Hariyali Amavasya 2022 will be celebrated on Thursday, July 28. Hariyali Amavasya falls a day after Shravan Shivratri which falls on Chaturdashi Tithi and is followed by Hariyali Teej.

Hariyali Amavasya is the new moon of the month of Shravan. Hariyali Amavasya is celebrated with great enthusiasm as the festival of the rainy season and Lord Shiva is worshiped with full devotion on this day.

In Hindi language, 'Amavasya' means 'No Moon Day'  and 'Hariyali' means greenery.Hence Hariyali Amavasya is celebrated as the festival of moon during the rainy season, when nature blooms at its best. The festival of Hariyali Amavasya is very famous in the northern states of India like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.It is also famous in other regions but with different names, in Maharashtra it is called 'Gatari Amavasya' .The customs and traditions differ, but the spirit of the celebration remains the same. Planting a tree on this day is considered very fruitful.

Rituals during Hariyali Amavasya
In Hinduism, the new moon day is dedicated to one's ancestors or ancestors.

Similarly, on the day of Hariyali Amavasya, devotees wake up early and take a bath. Thereafter, a puja is performed to please the 'Pitaras'. Special food is offered to Brahmins. The festival of Hariyali Amavasya is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees worship him with full devotion and seek his blessings for good rains and a bountiful harvest.It is believed that worshiping Shiva on Hariyali Amavasya brings wealth and prosperity. Devotees recite Vedic mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva and sing hymns in his praise. Special darshan and puja havan are performed in the temples of Lord Shiva all over the country. In some regions, people also observe a fast on this day. Only food is served during the day after completing all the rituals of the puja.
