The place of worship should be sanctified with the water of the Ganges. Lord Shiva should be bathed in Ganges water, milk, and honey. Belpatra, Shami leaves, and flowers should be offered. Lord Shiva should be worshipped by lighting incense and lamps. After this, food should be offered to God. Reciting Shiva Chalisa and Shiva on the day of Shivratri gives very good results. After Shiv Pooja, prasad should be distributed among all the devotees.
