Vrath Story (Katha)-
Once upon a time, in a village, lived an old woman who used to keep fast every Sunday. She used to wake up before the sunrise, smear her courtyard with cow dung, worship and give offerings to Lord Surya. The old woman did not have a cow of her own and so she used to borrow the dung from her neighbourhood. Lord Surya was very pleased with her devotion and she never had to face any hardship in her life. But the woman in her neighbourhood grew jealous of her. One Sunday, she didn’t allow the old woman to take the cow dung and tied the cow indoors instead of the courtyard. That day, the old woman could not smear her courtyard with the dung and so could not worship and slept without eating anything. When Lord Surya did not receive her offerings, he appeared in her dream and asked the reason for it. After the old woman explained everything, he blessed her and assured her that her problem will be resolved. The next morning, the old woman found a healthy cow with a calf, tied in her courtyard. She was delighted to have her own cow. But she couldn’t notice that the dung of that cow was of gold. The woman in the neighbourhood noticed it and every morning, before the old woman woke up, she used to replace that gold dung with her real one. For a long time, the old woman didn’t know about the gold dung and kept on fasting as usual. But after knowing this act of her neighbour, Lord Surya produced a thunderstorm. Seeing the storm, the aged woman tied her cow and calf indoors and the next morning she was surprised to see the gold dung. After that day, she kept her cow indoors. She gradually became rich with the gold dung and started living a prosperous life. Her neighbour became more envious of her. She reported the news of gold dung to the king of the city and he immediately took possession of the cow and the calf. That night, Lord Surya appeared in the dream of the king and instructed him to return the cow and the calf immediately otherwise the whole city will have to face the consequences of the wrath. The King immediately returned the cow and the calf to the old woman and apologised for his mistake. He even punished the neighbour lady for her wickedness. From that day, the king and the people kept a fast on Sunday for health, wealth and prosperity in life.
