Lord Krishna is known by different names, from Kanha, Kanhaiya to Devki Nandan and Madhusudan. The child form of Lord Krishna is lovingly called “Bal Gopal” and “Ladoo Gopal” by devotees. The birth of Lord Krishna is marked with a grand celebration known as “Krishna Janmashtami”, every year on the eighth day of Krishna Paksh in Bhadrapad Month. On this day the Lord is anointed, offered Shringaar, wrapped in beautiful garments, offered “56 Bhog '' and is swung in the cradle. His garment which is known as “Pitambar” is considered to be very important in the process of Shringaar. Pitambar is also one of His names, meaning the one whose clothes are yellow, that is the Lord Krishna.
Significance of “Pitambari Poshak”
There is a reason for the Pitambari Poshak or the yellow clothes of Lord Krishna. Many believe that God himself chose to wear yellow clothes but not many know that when he was a child he went to Rishi Sandpini to attain knowledge. It was there he was given those yellow clothes to be worn. Lord Krishna who adores Lord Mahadeva was born with the blue body, blue as sky or Mahadeva’s “Neelkanth”, which gives the sense of His “Aasan”.
Yellow color is considered to be the color of the planet Jupiter which contains the fourteen qualities that are to be found in Vedas, Purana, Nishad, Yoga, Nishtha, Oath and Satya Vaachan. It is said that because Krishna was born in Taurus ascendant with Moon and Ketu, he was able to fulfil all his desires and wishes from an early age. Yellow color often brings wealth and intelligence and is believed to calm our mind. This was the reason Krishna wore this color and so even now His devotees worship him in “Bal Gopal” idol in the Yellow outfit or “Pitambari Poshak”.
