On the day of Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees wake up early and worship Lord Ganesha. Devotees also observe strict fasting in honor of Shri Ganesha, while some may also observe partial fasting. Those who observe this fast take only fruit food. Peanuts, potatoes and sago khichdi are also included in the main Indian diet on this day.

Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat Moon Puja
Sankashti Puja is performed in the evening after sighting the moon. The idol of Lord Ganesha is decorated with Durva grass and flowers. During this, a lamp is also lit and Vedic mantras are also recited. After this the specific fast story is recited. The fast is broken only after worshiping Lord Ganesha and sighting the moon in the evening.
Special naivedya containing modaks and other favorite bhog of Lord Ganesha is prepared as prasad. This is followed by Aarti and later Prasad is distributed among all the devotees. On the day of Sankashti Chaturthi, special worship is dedicated to the Moon. In this, water, sandal paste, holy rice and flowers are offered while meditating on the moon god. On this day it is auspicious to recite Ganesh Ashtotra, Sankashnashan Stotra etc. for the sake of Lord Ganesha.

Since Sankashti Chaturthi is celebrated in every lunar month, Lord Ganesha is worshiped with different names in each month. Every fast has a specific purpose and significance. According to Hindu scriptures, on this holy day Lord Shiva bestowed his son Ganesha over other gods except Vishnu, Lakshmi and Parvati.
