Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a popular temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located inVishwanath Gali, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple is located on the west bank of the sacred Ganges and is one of the 12 most sacred Shiva temples, Jyotirlinga. The main gods, known by the names Shri Vishwanath and Vishweshwara, literally mean the Lord of the Universe. Varanasi was called Kashi in ancient times, so this temple is commonly referred to as the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The  Temple is considered by Hindu scriptures to be a central part of worship in Shaivist philosophy. It was destroyed many times by many Islamic rulers, and more recently by Aurangzeb, the sixth  emperor of Mughal, who built the Gambapi Mosque in its place. The current structure was built in 1780 by Indore's Marasa ruler Achillia by Holker in an adjacent location.

According to Shiva Prana, Brahma and Vishnu , once argued over who was the best. To test them, Shiva pierced the three worlds as Jyotirlinga, a vast and endless pillar of light. To determine who was more powerful, Vishnu took the shape of a boar and looked for the bottom. Brahma, on the other hand, took the form of a swan and flew to the top of the pillar. Brahma  lied from his arrogance, found the ending, and offered the Katsuki flower as a witness. Vishnu humbly confessed that he could not find a reason. Shiva then took the form of a furious Bhairava, cutting off Brahma's fifth lying head and cursing Brahma so that he would not be worshiped. Vishnu will be forever respected as equivalent to Shiva because of his honesty towards his own temple. Jyotirlinga is a symbol of the ancient Axis mundi, representing the highest formless (Nirguna) reality at the heart of creation, from which the shape of Shiva (Sagna) emerges. Therefore, Jyotirlinga Shrine is the place where Lord Shiva appeared as a burning pillar of light. Not to be confused with Jyotirlinga, Shiva comes in 64 forms. Each of the 12 archaeological sites of Jyotirlinga is named after the Lord God, and each is considered a different symptom of Shiva. In all of these places, the main image is the lingam, which represents the pillars of the beginning and endless Stambha that symbolize the infinite nature of Shiva.
Manikarnika Ghat on the banks of the Ganges near the Temple of Kasivishwanat is considered a Shaktist place of worship. The Shaivist literature, Daksha Yaga,  is regarded as an important literary story about the origin of Shakti Pisas.
