As per many folklores, Astrologers during the time of Dasaratha’s rule made a prophecy that there will be a famine for twelve years in his state. Astrologers believed that if Shani pierced through Rohini Nakshatra then there could arise a situation of severe famine. To save his subjects from the wrath of Shani, Dasaratha took his chariot and went to “Nakshatra Mandal” or the constellations. He there requested Shani Deva to change his way or else he will be forced to obey the rules of Rajdharma and pick up his catastrophic weapon. Shani was highly impressed by the concern of Dasaratha for the welfare of his state and his devotion towards his duty and accepted his request.

Shani Deva’s Boon To Dasaratha
To praise Shani Deva, Dasaratha recited the “Shani Stotra” which made Shani even happier and he asked Dasaratha to ask for more boons. Raja Dasaratha hence asked Him to free the people of earth from his “Mahadashas”. However, Shani couldn’t accept his request saying it was impossible and revealed that people go through his Mahadasha as per the function of planets as they provide the fruits to humans as per their deeds. But because he was impressed by Dasaratha recital of Shani Stotra he assured him, anyone who recited the same on a daily basis would not have to go through the ill effects of His maha Dasha.
