How old is the temple
It is said that this temple is very ancient. It is believed that Parmar Raja Bhoj got this temple built around 1050 AD. After this the temple was renovated by Maharaja Ranoji Scindia of Scindia Gharana in 1732. The only wish of the people here is that Nagraj Mahadev gives his darshan just once. All the devotees of Mahadev visit their Shiva Shambhu on the same day.
Mythological belief
The story of Takshak Raj is found in this temple. Legend has it that Takshak had done severe penance to please Mahadev. Pleased with the penance, Mahadev made Takshak the god of snakes and also gave Takshak the boon of immortality. After this Nagraj started living with Takshak Mahadev. But before residing in Mahakal, he had a wish that when he is in solitude, he should not disturb him. Since then this tradition is going on that the door of Nagchandreshwar temple opens only once in a year.On the day of Nagpanchami, devotees of Mahadev get to see this wonderful form of him. After having darshan, the Kaal Sarp Dosh on a person ends. Because of this, there is a very long queue in this temple on the day of Nag Panchami.
