Saphala Ekadashi Vrat Katha fasting story

On being asked by Dharmaraja Yudhishthar, Lord Shri Krishna told him about this story. According to the story told by Shri Krishna, once a king named Mahishman ruled over the city of Champavati. This king had four children and all four were sons. Of these four sons, a son named Lumpak was the eldest and a great sinner. He used to spend all his father's wealth on misdeeds and useless places. He used to spend all the money in prostitution and bad deeds and did not even respect his elders. The day the king came to know about Lumpak's misdeeds, the king decided to get him out of the kingdom.

After leaving the kingdom, Lumpak started stealing and committing wrongdoing in the greed of money. There came a time when he started eating animals after killing them. He lived under a Peepal tree in the forest, which was worshiped by the villagers with full faith. Millions of deities reside in the Peepal tree. Time passed, he started living his life by committing sins like this.

After some time, on the tenth day of Krishna Paksha of Paush month, due to cold and not having enough clothes, he could not sleep. Thus the whole night he became very ill due to cold. The next day due to ill health he was not able to hunt. As soon as he got better in the heat of the sun, he gathered some fruits and sat under the same peepal tree. When the sun set, he prayed that yesterday I could not sleep because of the cold. Please accept this offered fruit and protect me.

Lumpak had not eaten anything on that Ekadashi, which ended his fast. Lord Vishnu was very pleased on seeing this and prayed to him. The next morning he recovered and when he opened his eyes, there was a horse in front of him decorated with beautiful objects. Then there was a voice from Akashvani that Narayan ji has been pleased with you by fasting on your Ekadashi so that you have got freedom from all the sins. Now go to your father and take care of the kingdom. Hearing this, Lumpak was very happy and, thanking God from his heart, left for the kingdom.

Since then he and his family started observing this fast every year to keep the blessings of Narayan ji. Similarly, by fasting and worshiping Saphala Ekadashi, Lumpak Vaikuntha was finally attained. A person who observes this fast on Ekadashi and reads and listens to the story during the fast gets the same result as the Ashwamedha Yagya. Anyone can do this excellent fast. By observing this fast, all the sins are destroyed.
