Tungnath is one of the greatest Shiva sanctuaries/Temple on the planet and is the most elevated of the five Panch Kedar sanctuaries situated in Rudraprayag region, in the Indian province of Uttarakhand. The Tunganath (Literal meaning: Lord of the pinnacles/Peaks) mountains structure the Mandakini and Alaknanda stream valleys. It is situated at an elevation of 3,470 m (11,385 ft), and just beneath the pinnacle of Chandrashila.and is the second(Dwitiya Kedar) in the hierarchy of the Panch Kedars. It has a rich legend connected to the Pandavas, saints of the Mahabharata epic.

The Tunganath is permanently connected to the beginning of the Panch Kedar sanctuaries worked by the Pandavas. The legend expresses that wise Vyas Rishi exhorted the Pandavas that since they were at fault of killing their own family members (Kauravas, their cousins) during the Kurukshetra war, their demonstration could be exculpated simply by Lord Shiva.Consequently, the Pandavas went looking for Shiva who was keeping away from them since he was persuaded of the blame of Pandavas. The Pandavas constructed sanctuaries at every one of these areas to revere and adore Lord Shiva, looking for his absolution and endowments. Every temple is related to a piece of the bull or Shiva's body; Tungnath is distinguished as where the bahu (arms) were seen; bump was seen at Kedarnath; head showed up at Rudranath; his navel and stomach surfaced at Madhyamaheshwar; and his jata (hair or locks) at Kalpeshwar.

Geography

Tungnath is at the top of the ridge dividing the waters of the Mandakini river (raising from Kedarnath) from those of the Alaknanda river (raising above Badrinath). The Tungnath peak on this ridge is the source of three springs, which form the Akashkamini River. The temple lies about 2 km (1.2 mi) below the Chanrashila Peak (3,690 m (12,106 ft))

Climate
Climate is generally cool throughout the year. Summers are pleasant with average temperature hovering around 16 degrees Celsius during the day time. Winters are very chilly and temperature drops below the freezing point very frequently. The best time to visit the temple is from April to September. Due to heavy snowfall, Tungnath temple remains closed for around 6 months during winter.
