There are many ancient, wonderful temples in the country. An important part of such a unique heritage of India is this huge Kailasa temple carved in the Layan-shankhala located in Ellora district Aurangabad. Situated twenty kilometers away from Aurangabad city of Maharashtra, this 1200 years old and about 90 feet high temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. What makes this beautiful temple even more beautiful and special thing about temple is that this two-storey, 276 feet long and 154 feet wide temple has been built by cutting only one rock of the mountain. And it is famous for being the largest statue built using a single stone in the world. This temple of Lord Shiva called Kailasa or Kailash is exactly the Kailash of the Himalayas which is known as the home of Shiva.

Who built Kailasha temple-

The construction work of this temple was started by King Krishna of Rashtrakuta dynasty in Malkhed in 757-783 AD. The Rashtrakuta dynasty ruled large parts of the Indian subcontinent between the 6th and 10th centuries. It is part of a group of twenty-four temples and monasteries of the stunning Lord Shiva, known as the Ellora Caves. It took more than 100 years to complete this huge temple. About 7000 workers worked day and night continuously to build this temple and it was estimated that it took ten generations.

This is strange -
Hindus give special importance to worship and worship the idol of God in temples from time to time. But why does this not happen in this temple having importance like Mount Kailash? It is believed that till date no evidence of worship has ever been found in this ancient temple. And even today there are no priests in this temple. Nor is there any regular practice of worshiping here.
 
These temples are made with unique technology-
This temple of Lord Shiva is the only temple in the world which has been constructed from top to bottom. The ancient Kailasa temple is built with a unique cut-out technique. According to one story, when the Rashtrakuta ruler Elu became ill, his queen took a vow that if her husband recovered, she would build a magnificent temple for Lord Shiva and abstain from food till then. Her wish was fulfilled when her husband was cured, then a plan was made to build the temple, but it was to take years, till then how would the queen live without eating. An architect suggested that the temple be carved from top to bottom so that the queen would break the fast upon seeing the summit.

Where did those rocks go?
According to historians and archaeologists it is estimated that around 400,000 tonnes of rock were removed to build this temple. This huge amount of heavy rock has not been found or seen by anyone in and around the site. Where was it used or dumped is still an unanswered question?
