The following foods should be avoided during Chaturmas:
Leafy vegetables and brinjal during Shravan month. Milk products like curd and fermented foods in Bhadrapada and Ashwin months. Highly-flavoured vegetables like onion, garlic and protein-rich pulses like Urad dal/Masoor dal in Kartik month.
Since Lord Vishnu goes into a state of a deep sleep, devotees perform austerities and penance. It is a period of introspection, meditation, self-realisation, bathing in holy rivers and observing Vrats. It is an ideal time to take part in spiritual discourses. Moreover, with Ashadha and Shravan months, the monsoons arrive. It is a season when people usually contract diseases and fall sick. People usually refrain from consuming jaggery, milk products, spicy recipes, leafy vegetables, paan, supari and meat. Alcohol and tobacco consumption are also strictly prohibited. Those who abide by the rules of Chaturmas avoid consuming leafy vegetables during Shravan, milk products in Bhadrapada and Ashwin and highly-flavoured vegetables like onion and garlic in Kartik.

Therefore because of the rules mentioned above, no auspicious ceremonies like marriage, Griha Pravesh or the launch of a new venture are held. However, taking part in philanthropic activities is considered ideal during this period.
