Chaturmasya is an auspicious four-month period starting from Ashadha Shukla Dashami to Kartika Shukla Paurnima. The months of Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashvina and Kartika fall under this period. These four months are said to be very pleasing to Bhagavan Vishnu. Chaturmas is reserved for penance, austerities, fasting, bathing in holy rivers and religious observances for all. Devotees resolve to observe some form of vow, be it of silence or abstaining from a favourite food item, or having only a single meal in a day.

The following foods should be avoided during Chaturmas:
Leafy vegetables and brinjal during Shravan month. Milk products like curd and fermented foods in Bhadrapada and Ashwin months. Highly-flavoured vegetables like onion, garlic and protein-rich pulses like Urad dal/Masoor dal in Kartik month.
Since Lord Vishnu goes into a state of a deep sleep, devotees perform austerities and penance. It is a period of introspection, meditation, self-realisation, bathing in holy rivers and observing Vrats. It is an ideal time to take part in spiritual discourses. Moreover, with Ashadha and Shravan months, the monsoons arrive. It is a season when people usually contract diseases and fall sick. Therefore, during Chaturmas, people perform Vrat to keep their digestive system in check and avoid eating certain kinds of food to maintain good health.
