The origin story of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
The story of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is believed to be related to Rishi Markandeya. According to legend, when sage Mukunda does not have any children, he along with his wife performs severe penance for Lord Shiva to wish for children. Lord Shiva, pleased with his tenacity, blesses him with a son, but at the same time also tells that the age of the child will not belong. With the blessings of Lord Shiva, the sage gets a son. The name of the son is Markandeya. The sage was always worried because of the young age of his child. Son Markandeya is worried about his father's condition and asks him about it. When Rishi Mukunda tells him everything, Markandeya asks his father not to worry as he believed that he can attain a long life because of his devotion to Lord Shiva.
