During the shradh period of sixteen days, we get to hear two types of saying when it comes to buying or shopping. Firstly, that one should buy nothing new during these 16 days because it is not auspicious and other that when our ancestors come on earth they feel happy seeing us buying new things. So as per the saying idea, we must buy things during these 16 days. Although the majority believe in the first idea and very little belief in the second idea. According to scriptures, Yamraj, the Lord of death, frees the soul from Yamlok for a few days during the shradh so the soul can visit their loved ones on earth.

According to the first belief, Shradh paksha is related to death hence not an auspicious time. As we mourn during the death of family members and abstain from involvement in any auspicious tasks or important rituals and put our important projects on hold, similarly the emotions are no different than those during shradh. Whereas there are other sets of people who have contrary beliefs and thoughts, according to them the number 16 which are the days when shradh happens is an auspicious number. Also, how can the arrival of our ancestors on earth be considered inauspicious? The bodily is no longer present with us, they become natives of other lok after death hence their soul is pure and pious. Their arrival in a subtle form is nothing but beneficial for us. When our pitra sees us buying new things and becoming happy, they feel content too that their descendants are living happily and peacefully. If we are progressing and happy then how come their souls can be hurt just because we are buying new things?

Shradh paksha can be said to be a traditional festival of Hindus to make the departed souls happy and that is observed for their peace. Buying new things and engaging in auspicious tasks are not going to hurt their sentiments, hence not inauspicious for us as well. Pitra always arrives between Ganesha Pooja and Durga Pooja. If we buy anything in their presence then we will receive their blessings. Their blessings can be extremely favorable for us and can help us in our growth.

Offering gratitude to our ancestors for their sacrifices is what is called Shradh. During these days one should never be involved in any immoral, criminal, inhuman activity or any wrongdoing in that matter and not abstain from doing any auspicious tasks.
