There are many stories related to celebrating Shivratri of Sawan. However, according to the most popular belief, Lord Shiva drank the poison that came out during the churning of the ocean. As a result of which, he became afflicted with the negative energy of poison. In Treta Yuga, Ravana meditated on Shiva and he brought the holy water of the Ganges using a Kanwar. He offered Gangajal on Lord Shiva and thus his negative energy was removed. Because of this, Shivratri is considered to be of great importance in Sawan.
