 Where does the Ganges originate?
 The Ganges River, also known as the Ganges, flows 2,525 kilometers (1,569 mi) from the Himalayan Mountains into the Bay of Bengal in northern India and Bangladesh. The Ganges River begins at the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayas.  The glacier is located at an altitude of 3,892 meters (12,769 ft).  The Ganges River flows through the countries of India and Bangladesh.  However, its large delta in the Bengal region, which it shares with the Brahmaputra River, is mostly located in Bangladesh.  The Ganges is one of the major rivers of the Indian subcontinent that flows east through the Gangetic Plain of northern India into Bangladesh.  The river covers a distance of about 2,510 km in the Western Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand and drains into the Sundarbans delta in the Bay of Bengal.

 What is the depth of Ganga The river has an average depth of 16 m (52 ft) and a maximum depth of 30 m (100 ft).  The major rivers flowing into the Ganges are: Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandaki, Budhi Gandak, Koshi, Mahananda, Tamsa, Yamuna, Son and Punpun.  The Ganges basin with its fertile soil is important to the agricultural economies of India and Bangladesh.  It is also historically important as many former provincial or royal capitals such as Pataliputra, Allahabad, Kannauj, Murshidabad, Calcutta, etc. are situated on its banks.  The Ganges basin drains about 1,000,000 square kilometres.

 The Ganges and its tributaries provide a year-round source of irrigation to a large area.  Many crops are grown in this area.  The Ganges basin covers over 1 million square kilometers (386,000 sq mi).  It has the largest population of any river basin in the world.  It includes more than 400 million people.  The Ganges Basin supports many diverse ecosystems, from alpine forests near Gaumukh to mangrove forests in the plains of North India and the saline clay flats of West Bengal.
