Sankranti is the transfer of the Sun from one zodiac to another.  There are twelve sankrantis in a year and Vrischika aka Vrischika is the eighth astrological sign in the zodiac.  The fixed, water sign associated with Scorpio is Scorpio and is ruled by Mars.

According to Hindu belief, the Sankranti period is considered highly significant for charity, penance and the performance of Shradh for ancestors.  Taking a bath in the holy rivers is considered very auspicious.
 
Sun will transit from Libra to Scorpio on the intervening night of 16th and 17th November.  The position of Sun on Libra is not good and Sun is in weak position, now it will move to Scorpio which is better house for Sun, here it receives energy.  The Sun will remain in Scorpio for about a month.  Its condition will affect the individual as well as the country and the world.
 
In the Tamil calendar, Vrischika Sankranti marks the beginning of 'Karthigai Masam' and in the Malayalam calendar 'Vrischika Masam', the Hindu community celebrates the rituals of Vrischika Sankranti with utmost devotion here.

On this day, devotees perform Shradh and Pitru Tarpan, which is an important ritual of the day.
 
Donation of a cow to a Brahmin on Vrishchik Sankranti is considered very auspicious.
 
Vishnu Sahasranama, Aditya Hriday etc. are Hindu scriptures read on this day, which must be recited.
 
Vedic mantras and hymns are recited regularly on this day.
